Geoffrey's Consulting Practices:

The ComputerSmith.com

Money4nature.com

We're always up to our ears in projects!  Here's a sampling.   Maybe you'll find a project that you can help us with!

bullet

Family - We spend as much time as we can with the local extended family, including Geoffrey's mom and dad Devore and Ruth Smith, and Camille's mom and dad Darlene and Don Armstrong.  We are blessed to have them here in San Diego and Valley Center, in good health.  Here are some updates and photos from our visits with our parents, as well as other loved ones.

bullet

Devore Smith (Geoffrey's dad) -  Dad has become very active in Sierra Club work, serving on Land Use and Forest committees, and representing the Sierra Club in many regional committees and task forces.  He has been a member of the Chapter Executive Committee for two years, and was just elected to two more!  We are very proud of him!  You can email dad at mailto:devore@cts.com.

bullet

Ruth Smith (Geoffrey's mom) - Ever the creative artist, mom continues to produce wonderful wood carvings.  She is the world's best grandmother to Matthew and Becky, and is very active in study of our family's genealogy, and did much of the planning for our recent Millennium Reunion Homecoming to the Isle of Man.

bullet

Darlene Armstrong (Camille's mom) - Enjoying her retirement from public schools, she has become quite skilled at yoga, practicing the technique several times a week.  She is finding time to pursue her interests in gardening, reading, and volunteer ushering at the California Center for the Arts.

bullet

Don Armstrong (Camille's dad) - Don is passionate about all aspects of his mining, including building equipment, studying the geology, and analyzing the ore.  He spends many weeks each year working his claims in Nevada.  Keeping the home and surrounding land in Valley Center in order, as well as his rentals, takes more time.

bullet

Kimberly (Smith) Billman (Geoffrey's sister) - Mother Kim shepherds kids Matthew (1992) and Becky (1995) through the miracle of their growth.  She is getting back into her harping after a few year's hiatus, and has created a wonderful home environment in the family's new La Mesa home at Lake Helix.  Husband Glenn has transitioned from his position as pathologist at Children's Hospital, into a research fellowship at the same institution.  Early indications are that he is very happy to have more time with his family.

bullet

Mark Armstrong (Camille's brother) and Donna - Mark and wife Donna just celebrated son Luke's graduation from Valley Center High School.  Mark's electrical contracting business takes much of his time, and what is left goes into the remodel of the family home -- now nearly complete (see smile on Donna's face!)  Donna drives a school bus full of beautiful children, and has been a wonderful mom to Luke.  Donna has devoted much energy volunteering at Luke's schools over the years -- the world could use more moms like Donna!

bullet

Luke Armstrong (Camille's nephew) - Luke is all grown up now.  He graduated in the first graduating class from Valley Center High School in 2000, and is now pursuing a career in firefighting at Palomar College.  Luke enjoys riding motorcycles in the desert with his friends, and is the proud owner of an awesome truck.

bullet

Renee Armstrong (Camille's sister) and Lupe - Dr. Renee is a successful and sensitive family practice medical doctor in Santa Rosa.  (Geoffrey grew up in Santa Rosa, so enjoys trips back home to see them.)

bullet

Merle Armstrong (Camille's sister) - Now living in Valley Center with her kids Shallan and Noah, and husband Karl.  Merle enjoys singing, and helping family and friends in need.

We were saddened by the passing of Camille's dear grandmothers Edith in 1998 and Ina Belle in 2000.  Each were dearly loved by their families, and left this earth after rich lives spanning over 90 years each.  Our lives are richer for having known and loved them.

bullet

California Wild Heritage Campaign - Camille and Geoffrey serve on the state-wide steering committee for this exciting new wilderness campaign.  In addition to helping manage the overall campaign, we also are directly coordinating the work of over 20 dedicated volunteers in San Diego managing the surveying, mapping and publicity efforts for over 25 potential wilderness and wild-and-scenic river proposals in San Diego, Imperial and Orange counties.  Camille has enjoying her part-time, time consuming!, paid organizer position for the campaign.  A federal wilderness bill, sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer, was introduced in May 2002!   Check out the link for details on the campaign.  In January 2003, Geoffrey took over the task of organizer for San Diego, and is thoroughly excited about the idea of managing a campaign again!

bullet

Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve - Geoffrey continues to serve as the chairperson for the Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC) to the Task Force for this 3,700 acre open-space preserve, which was set aside in the public domain in 1980.  The CAC meets regularly to provide oversight to the park operations, and to support City and County ranger and Recreation Dept. staff in the running of the Preserve.  The Preserve is our backyard now!

bullet

Black Mountain Open Space Preserve - Geoffrey sits on the Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC) to the Park and Recreation Department for this relatively new open space park.  The mountain is very recognizable in the north part of the city, and is home to an inactive arsenic/gold mine!  We're in the early stages of building this park, and are working with local land owners, the BLM and the City to increase the acreage.  We're up to almost 1,000 acres now, with the recent aquisition of the Montana Mirador property in 2001.

bullet

Sierra Club - Camille and Geoffrey both continue to be very active in the Club.  We met while working on the California Desert Protection Act in 1987.  Here are some of the projects we are involved with:

bullet

Bookstore - Geoffrey has been running the Chapter Bookstore as volunteer manager since 1993.  The Store continues to provide a service to members and the general community, and generates revenue for the Chapter in the process.  We just launched our new on-line ecommerce site, providing on-line purchasing using secure credit card transactions.  Visit our website, or come to the store at 3820 Ray Street, San Diego, CA, or call 619.299.1797.

bullet

Forest and Wilderness - Camille has recently become chairperson of this committee, which Geoffrey has chaired for about 8 years.  We enjoy our work with the volunteers, and continue to develop good relations with agency staff at the Cleveland National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management.  In 2001, we are working very hard on the Forest Management Plan update.

bullet

One Club - Camille developed this very successful program in the San Diego Chapter, bringing outings and conservation issues together.  Having met with great success in San Diego, Camille recently went nationwide and facilitated similar programs in Michigan, Georgia, Idaho and Texas.  Camille is being honored in September 2000 as the 2nd recipient of the national Sierra Club's One Club award, in San Francisco.

Valley Center School - Camille is still there, continuing a long tradition that began with her mother, and Camille's own primary education at the same facility.  After 7 years of teaching 4th grade, in 2000 Camille moved back to kindergarten where she previously taught for 12 years.  Camille enjoys the smaller class size (20), and working on the K-1 campus with new faculty and staff friends.   Since 2000 years she has been job-sharing with her dear friend Merrill Gill, alternating 1 week on and 1 week off throughout the year.  Camille has been job-sharing since 1997 and is very happy with the arrangement!  The flexibility of time has allowed Camille to 'have a life', and to explore her passions in environmental activism and community organizing -- for which she has a real talent.

Sierra Club - Geoffrey took a big step in September 2000 and came to work full-time for the Sierra Club, San Diego Chapter.  In his new role as Conservation Coordinator, Geoffrey supports the work of dozens of active issue volunteers as the Sierra Club works to preserve, protect and enjoy the wild places of the earth.  Geoffrey's responsibilities also include fundraising, volunteer recruitment and public relations.  Geoffrey is a very happy camper (albeit a wee bit poorer now!)
On April 16, 2003, Geoffrey's position was eliminated ('defunded', or 'furloughed').

bullet

Stellcom, Inc. - Geoffrey served for 4 years at Stellcom as the company's first MIS manager, where he oversaw the building of the information systems infrastructure for the company as it grew from 15 internal staff to nearly 300 in January 2000, with 150 additional field staff.  Geoffrey left the company in June, 2000 to seek new challenges, and to boldly go where he has not gone before.  Follow Stellcom as it moves ever closer to it's Initial Public Offering (IPO).  Geoffrey is 'bullish' on Stellcom!

bullet

The ComputerSmith - Geoffrey's computer consulting business continues to thrive.  'TCS' focuses currently on Microsoft Exchange Server deployment and installation support, and Windows NT/2000 network administration.  Other services include PC configuration and support, web site development, and donor tracking database support (DonorPerfect, ebase.)  Please contact Geoffrey should you require assistance in the support of your personal computing, server or networking equipment.

bullet

San Diego Exchange User Group - Geoffrey founded the SDEUG in the fall of 1996.  After 5 great years of networking people and machines, he stepped down in 2001 to let others carry on.  SDEUG fosters discussion and information sharing for Microsoft's Exchange Server product.

bullet

AEA CIO Roundtable - Geoffrey worked with the local chapter of the American Electronics Association (AEA) in 1999 to form the first CIO (Chief Information Officer) Roundtable in San Diego.
