Officials blamed the 7,500-gallon spill on high sewage flows which caused a treatment basin to overflow. The spill lasted from 10 p.m. Sunday to 1:45 a.m. Monday and breached three containment areas to reach Escondido Creek, which flows west to the San Elijo Lagoon. Contamination signs are posted at access points to the creek, including Harmony Grove Bridge, Country Club Road, the Elfin Forest campground and the San Elijo Lagoon mouth at Cardiff State Beach. Signs will remain in place until samples show the water is safe for recreational use. Sub Title: [1 Edition] Column Name: AROUND THE REGION Start Page: B-7 Dateline: ESCONDIDO
